The Organization

Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organisation which originated in France and is committed to ending world hunger. The organisation helps malnourished children and provides communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions to hunger.

The Challenge

The client had disparate data from 2011 across more than 10,000 excel files with multiple tabs. Users wanted to find an easier way to navigate through many countries, drill down to district level, find out SAM coverage and support in this area. As the data was in Excel, it was not rationalised nor was there any common structure. Data had to be consolidated into a single DB instance, creating relationships and front ended with a web application which allows users to query these data sets to obtain meaningful representations per country. Users also wanted to have the option to compare data sets over a period of years; to ascertain if specific countries were making progress in certain political areas.

The Solution & Execution

Icreon consolidated all the current data sets into a NOSQL solution. We then wrote scripts to create indexed data which can be accessed via a RELATIONAL Database. We worked on a Web based application where a map interface was given to users to query the data sets. Based on the data set selection, the countries were marked in variant gradients showing the occurrence of SAM vs what policies the countries have adopted to solve the issue. Researches can add multiple parameters and also choose year range; which would then show a ‘trend’ analysis of the SAM pattern across continents. This had drill downs to sub-district-level providing a visual on how the data has been assimilated along with being able to see all the connected policy documents.
